1880s Italianate brick house in Hamilton, Ohio German Village with freshly repointed brick walls

MASONRY CONTRACTOR IN HAMILTON, OHIO

We repair Hamilton’s old brick the way it was built, in soft lime mortar.

Old brick needs the right mortar

More than a quarter of Hamilton’s homes were built in 1939 or earlier. Brick that old is usually soft, and hard portland mortar makes its faces pop off in freeze-thaw.

We test the old mortar, match it in lime and repoint by hand. Adriel Moore, the owner, looks at every job himself.

Hamilton houses we know

German Village and Dayton Lane are full of 1800s Italianate brick with stone sills and tall chimneys. Rossville, across the river, mixes old brick homes with Main Street storefronts.

We see worn-out joints, cracked chimney crowns and stone foundations washing out at grade. In the historic districts, we bring the review board its mortar analysis and sample panel.

★★★★★

“We inherited a historic home with a failing stone foundation. Swiss Masonry worked with our structural engineer and the city's historic preservation office without us having to babysit a single conversation. They know how to work with old buildings. Highly recommend.”

Hamilton masonry questions

Do I need city approval to repoint in German Village?

Yes. Exterior work in a Hamilton historic district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Architectural Design Review Board, though like-for-like repairs are often approved at staff level.

Why not use harder mortar on old brick?

Hard portland mortar is stronger than soft pre-1920 brick, so frost breaks the brick faces off along the joints. Lime mortar wears first and can be repointed again.

Can you price only the items on my code notice?

Yes. We price what your City of Hamilton notice lists, and anything else we spot goes on a separate line.
